“A new day for student borrowers”: Statement on Biden-Harris Reported Nomination of Miguel Cardona For Secretary of Education | Press Release
BOSTON - Today, it has been announced that President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris would nominate Miguel Cardona to serve as the Secretary of Education. A former public school teacher, Cardona is the current Connecticut Education Commissioner.
The Project on Predatory Student Lending has represented more than one million former for-profit college students and brought landmark cases on their behalf against the Department of Education, predatory colleges, and lenders. The Project issued the following statement regarding the Biden-Harris transition team’s announcement that they will nominate Miguel Cardona as Secretary of Education
“This is a new day for student borrowers. For too long, for-profit students’ voices and legal rights have been ignored by the Secretary of Education. We have every hope that will change under Secretary Miguel Cardona.
The Biden-Harris administration, under the leadership of new Secretary Cardona, has the opportunity to listen to for-profit college students and make a difference for them on Day One. It is firmly within the Secretary’s power and legal authority to cancel student debt through executive action. We look forward to working with the new administration to ensure that the debts of defrauded for-profit college students are cancelled and that we do all we can to stop predatory for-profit colleges from cheating students.”
